CANtemporaries Artist Residency and Workshop

JANUARY 2023

The CAN Foundation is excited to announce the CANtemporaries Artist Residency. Artists of all disciplines are encouraged to apply for this 3-month developmental residency beginning in January 2023.  During their time in residency artists will be offered studio space (visual and recording) at the CAN HQ, collaboration with fellow artists in residence, recording, performance and/or exhibition opportunities, bi-weekly critiques and brainstorming sessions, and a one-time $2,000 stipend.
The CANTemporaries residency is made possible by a grant awarded to The CAN Foundation by the Clara Elizabeth Jackson Carter Foundation and a partnership with the Torggler Fine Arts Center.

Join us this Saturday, April 22nd for 'Hexagonal', the culminating celebration of our three month CANtemporaries Artist Residency featuring performances and an exhibition at Assembly

Musicians Denise Battle, Tyler Donavan, and Chris [i.D Jeter] will perform original music with live bands on the rooftop. The intimate performances will provide the listener insight into the artists' current work. Denise Battle will sing opera and share her most recent original song. Tyler Donavan will perform songs from his upcoming album, GASPING4AIR, in addition to some of his favorites from earlier in his catalog. Chris [i.D] Jeter and collaborators will share a body of work centering around the theme of resilience that has been in production during his time in residency

Visit the 4th floor for a group exhibition including the work of our visual artists in residence: Dan Flounders, Heather Beardsley, and Garth Fry. Flounder's portion of the exhibition is representative of a man amidst change: conversion to a new way of life, new religious practice, marriage, and reflecting on familial relationships before and after conversion. Beardsley will share a series of  photographs with embroidered plants overtaking people and buildings inspired by the places her art has taken her: Budapest, Vienna, Beijing, Chicago, Paris, Kyiv, and Las Vegas. Fry will contribute wooden sculptures made in San Francisco.
